While it is important to address the ‘dark side’ of sport, an unhealthy fixation with the negative can actually act as a self-fulfilling prophecy, as we painstakingly search to find every modicum of sporting wrong and flaunt it to the vociferous public. All this while so much that is good about sport goes unnoticed; as ludicrous as it might seem to some, there is actually an “inner good” to the sporting world.
A THING IS POSSIBLE, THEREFORE IT IS ~ Blaise Pascal
Sport has been under mass scrutiny in recent years due to the increasing number of drug scandals unveiled; with heroes becoming villains, and villains re-vilifying themselves. However it is not our intention in to focus on those, instead we look at the beauty that (true) sport embodies; the success of youth, the ratification of life decisions and the integrity of sporting tradition.
We look at how a boy rose from Harlem to become the USA’s greatest hope in Sabre fencing, and how - at the wont of Prince Harry - the “King of sports” Polo is raising funds for the disadvantaged in a small country called Lesotho. We look at the Europeans paving the way in the NBA, and explore the healing nature of basketball with the “The Park is my Church”.
We even look at the metamorphosis of poker; its transformation into a sport, erstwhile removing the gambling element and with that the negative connotations that tarnish that sector.
Then there is the former Karate world champion Tony Schiena using his mastery in real world situations to help the military in their fight against terrorism, while at the same time working with the likes of Pachino to entertain on the big screen.
SAMSON Vol. 2 shines light on beautiful aspects of sport that often get overlooked in favour of more ‘viral’ media. Hopefully through these pages we’ll also encourage you to reflect more on oneself, and more importantly - the beauty that lies within.
